Cereal Crops

Cereals are widely cultivated and produced annually. The main focus of Malakand Model Farms is to increase the productivity per hectare. The main cereal which are grown are Wheat & Maize. There are a number of reasons why cereals have been so important in our diet. They can be grown in a variety of areas, some even in adverse soil and climatic conditions. They give high yields per acre as compared to most other crops, and once harvested, their excellent stored stability combined with their nutritional value makes them the most desirable of foods for holding in reserve. They are easy to package and transport and they can be used to produce a large variety of highly desirable foods both for humans and animals, as well as beverages for human consumption. Cereal grains are the staple food of the peoples of developing countries like Pakistan, providing them, with about 75{fa2d90009ff7d3e3cf513e67a9bc90284fd204f055a45ee90c6ef3a8d7c4c53d} of their total caloric intake and about 67{fa2d90009ff7d3e3cf513e67a9bc90284fd204f055a45ee90c6ef3a8d7c4c53d} of their total protein intake.

Wheat is the first important and strategic cereal crop for the majority of world’s populations. It is the most important staple food of majority of world’s population. Wheat is an edible grain, one of the oldest and most important of the cereal crops. Wheat is a major ingredient in such foods as bread, porridge, crackers, biscuits, Muesli, pancakes, pies, pastries, cakes, cookies, muffins, rolls, doughnuts, gravy, boza (a fermented beverage), and breakfast cereals. At Malakand Model Farm it is grown on 65{fa2d90009ff7d3e3cf513e67a9bc90284fd204f055a45ee90c6ef3a8d7c4c53d} of the total area of the farm.

Maize or Corn is an important cereal crop of Malakand Model Farm and the Importance of any crop can be judged by its area, production utilization and share in trade. There are two crops based on sowing time i.e Spring and Summer Maize. There are many products of maize. Maize is also an important livestock feed both as silage and as crop residue. The maize grains are used industrially for starch and oil extraction. It is an important source of carbohydrate, protein, iron, vitamin B, and minerals.  It is also used to treat congestive heart failure, diabetes, high blood pressure, fatigue, and high cholesterol levels. At MMF it is grown on an area of 50 acres. Both the traditional and hybrid varieties are used. Traditional verities are mostly for seed multiplication purposes. Hybrid varieties 30K08-Pioneer & Gorila Garanan are the most industrious varieties. While traditional variety Azam is also on top amongst the other traditional varieties.
